What E-Stim Is and How It Can Ease Your Pain

Finding relief from pain can be an exhausting endeavor. Not every pain relief option is right for you and your pain, but knowing what options are available to you is an important first step. E- stim is one such pain management option. Here is what you need to know about E-stim so you can decide if this treatment option is right for you.

What Is E-Stim?

E-stim refers to electrical stimulation. By using E-stim devices, electrical pulses can target specific muscles and nerves in order to stimulate them into contraction. Through repeated forced contractions, it helps to relieve muscle tension, increase blood flow, and speedup recovery time. E-stim can also help a muscle to become stronger through the repeated contractions. Which is why it is a popular aid for stroke victims that have to retrain their muscles to do basic skills.

How E-Stim Works

E-stim works by placing electrodes housed in sticky pads onto the areas of concern on your body. The sticky pads are easy to remove but just help keep the electrodes in the desired position.

These electrodes are connected to a unit that controls the output of the electrical pulses. Once the electrodes are placed on the body, the therapist will begin sending electrical pulses to your muscles. Therapy will start on a low setting and work up to more intense output.

You can expect the pulses to feel tingly or like little pins, but it should not feel painful. As the setting increases in intensity, your muscles may even begin to twitch involuntarily.

Most E-stim sessions last from 5-15 minutes, depending on the site being treated and its condition.

What Can E-stim Treat?

E-stim is a mainstay in rehabs and hospitals today and it can go a long way in helping you feel better and gain more freedom. If you experience back pain, joint pain, DOMS, Trauma related muscle pain, or nerve pain, E-stim can help ease your pain.

If you are curious to see if E-stim therapy can help ease your pain, stop by our Denver Sports Rehab facility! We would love to show you how everything works and help get you started down the road to feeling better.
