What You Should Know About the Graston Technique

What You Should Know About the Graston Technique

The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy used by healthcare professionals, primarily chiropractors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers. It is a technique that we utilize in our Denver Sports Rehab facility as well. It involves the use of specially designed stainless steel instruments to perform soft tissue mobilization. Here's an overview of how the Graston Technique works and how it can help with healing.

Soft Tissue Mobilization

The Graston Technique aims to address soft tissue restrictions and promote healing in the body. Soft tissue refers to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. When these tissues become injured or develop scar tissue, it can lead to pain, reduced range of motion, and functional limitations. The Graston Technique helps break down scar tissue and adhesions, promoting the remodeling and healing of affected tissues.

Instrument-Assisted Technique

The unique aspect of the Graston Technique is the use of specialized instruments. These instruments are made of stainless steel and have various shapes and sizes to target different areas of the body. During a treatment session, the practitioner applies these instruments to the patient's skin, using specific strokes and pressures to identify and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction.

Detecting and Treating Adhesions

The instruments used in the Graston Technique enable the practitioner to detect and treat adhesions or restrictions within the soft tissues. By running the instruments over the skin, the practitioner can feel areas of tissue dysfunction characterized by texture changes or the presence of scar tissue. They then apply the instruments with appropriate pressure to break down these adhesions and promote healing.

Benefits of the Graston Technique

Pain Reduction

Soft tissue restrictions and scar tissue can cause pain and discomfort. The Graston Technique helps alleviate pain by breaking down these adhesions, reducing inflammation, and promoting blood flow to the affected area.

Improved Range of Motion

Scar tissue and adhesions can limit joint mobility and range of motion. By addressing these issues, the Graston Technique helps improve flexibility and restore normal movement patterns.

Enhanced Tissue Healing

The controlled microtrauma caused by the instrument-assisted technique stimulates the body's natural healing response. It promotes the production of collagen, remodeling of tissues, and the formation of healthy scar tissue.

Faster Recovery

By targeting and treating soft tissue dysfunction, the Graston Technique can accelerate the healing process. This can be beneficial for individuals recovering from acute injuries, chronic conditions, or post-surgical rehabilitation.
