What You Should Know About Cupping

a

At Denver Sports Rehab, the services we offer are all aimed at helping your body perform better and feel better. One type of therapy that has helped countless people is cupping. If you are curious about cupping but are unfamiliar with it, no worries! That topic is exactly what we are going to be diving into today.

How Cupping Works

Cupping works by creating suction against your skin and the vessel or cup. To create this effect, your therapist will light a cotton ball on fire and then place the cotton ball into the glass cup. This creates heat inside the vessel. Once the cup is properly heated, the fire is removed, and the cup is quickly placed onto the patient’s skin in order to trap the heat. As the vessel begins to cool against the patient’s skin, it creates a vacuum that draws the tissue into the glass. This process is repeated until all the tissue being treated has been covered.

How Cupping Helps

Cupping therapy works because it increases blood flow to the areas that are being treated. Increasing blood flow to injured tissue is a part of your body’s natural healing process. Cupping creates inflammation that tells your body that you are being injured. Blood cells are then forced to that area of the body to begin repair. Cupping basically tricks your body into jumpstarting the healing process.

Are There Risks?

As for associated risks for cupping therapy, there are virtually none. The only considerations may be for those that have conditions that make it difficult for them to form blood clots, or if you are on a blood thinning medication of some sort. And if the thought of having bruises on your skin does not seem worth the benefits, you may also want to skip this treatment. Otherwise, it is a very risk-free form of therapy.

If cupping therapy seems like something you could benefit from, contact Denver Sports Rehab to schedule an appointment today!
